Wanna get Ice cream?

Today, Aliza and I were instructed to go to yet another of the City Slickers farms - WOW (West Oakland Woods) farms - while Jonno and Molly dusted some mite- and worm-infested chickens with Diatomacious Earth. I am very glad that I made it clear at the first few Wednesdays in Oakland that I do not love chickens. When Aliza and I met up with them for a few minutes they were wearing face masks and holding chickens upside-down, and there was a ton of white stuff floating around.
Anyways, so Aliza and I left the house pretty early and even packed our lunches the night before so we would get to WOW farm at 9 am. Neither of us read the email from our supervisor that well and did not review it in the morning so we did not actually know the location of WOW farm. That said, we biked for a good 40 minutes to 7th street in Oakland (almost the end of Oakland) and then stopped :) We called a few people and finally Jonno answered his phone and told us to just come back to this other farm we've been to in the past. Since we were frustrated about not knowing exactly where to go and getting what we thought at the time were confusing directions, Aliza said "Sooo...wanna get ice cream?"
"Yes!" was my adamant response. Ben and Jerry's cookie dough and chocolate ice cream eaten on a sidewalk in West Oakland worked wonders. After taking our pretty time we ended up back at the farm Jonno had told us to return to. Once there, our supervisor mentioned that in the email she had told us to get there at 10 am instead of 9 anyways, giving us an extra hour free in the morning. Silly us!
Also, the place where we got ice cream was this little organic grocery by 7th and Mandela that sells granola and seitan and lots of nutritious-looking items. The cashier/manager said people in the area are a bit apprehensive about approaching the store since it looks fancy/expensive, but it is actually relatively cheap. The store is part of a non-profit organization trying to bring healthy food to low-income areas.

Anyways, it was a day filled with pest control (leaf miner), manure flipping, and removing chards 6 FEET LONG!

Also today I was particularly tired and the biking was a bit harder. Lucky for me, tomorrow we're going right back to West Oakland with the rest of our Adamah crew for a group backyard garden build!

Upon our final return home today - and a much-needed shower - Ben filled me in on the rest of the Adamah crew's field trip today to a seed-sharing library. My imagination ran wild with that idea. Also, we tried to talk to each other only in Hebrew - just for fun - which made everything twice as funny at least!

Finally, tonight after dinner an awesome guy named John Valenzuela did a workshop with us on soil and soil fertility and much mind-blowing information.
