We spent this morning a couple blocks away in the backyard garden of this guy Jim. He has a bright purple house with green trimmings, and lives with five other people. In the back they have a variety of fruit trees, potatoes, beets, a corn plot, strawberry patch, beehive, rabbits, goats, chickens, and many other things, I'm sure. After learning a bit about the place we worked on collecting all the straw/poop/dirt/etc from the floor of the chicken/goat area. I realize I made that sound very simple. Actually it involved tons of shoveling/pitchforking, wheelbarrowing, shoveling/pitchforking, smelliness, and our farm truck. The overall idea is to bring all this wonderful composting material over to our farm :) My fingers still faintly stink of goat poop. I spent a lot of time pitchforking this stuff, wheelbarrowing, and standing in the bed of our truck for lifting and dumping etc. This was a bit reminiscent of a lot of our time at City Slicker Farms. Also, we joked that this was our truck's initiation into being a farm truck. So far, Jonno, farm manager Tali, and I have emptied a truckload of this stuff onto our site, and I am more than excited to empty this second truckload in a little while. Jim says we can probably get about another three truckloads of matted poopy straw from his goat area. A nice exchange of labor for compost. Another notable matter: today Jim was wearing a purple shirt and green pants, matching the colors of his house!
